NIN Kicks Ass!

On Friday the 15th, my sons and I went with Andy to Cricket Pavilion for the NIN/Jane's Addiction show. I had never heard of the opening band and wasn't expecting much from them. Their name was Street Sweeper Social Club and they were... AWESOME. It turns out that guitarist Tom Morello teamed up with rapper Boots Riley for this side project and it paid off. These guys were so good that I am actually going to buy their album when it comes out in June rather than just "download" it (thanks Koren).

Next up, we thought we were waiting for Jane's Addiction but it turned out to be Nine Inch Nails! They were amazing and did about a two hour set that had 15 to 20 thousand people on their feet. Trent Reznor was in good form and he certainly did not disappoint. Although every song was performed to perfection, the coolest was when they performed "Head Like a Hole" because just about everyone in the arena was shouting the words like an anthem.

Jane's Addiction started off strong with a staggering performance of "Three Days". There was a moment during the lengthy instrumentals when the audience seemed to sway with the very pulse of the bass. Perry Farrell's voice but cracked in places. Even still they sang some great songs. At one point Dave Navarro was in the middle of a guitar solo when some asshole in the pit threw a cup of beer at his chest. Beer splashed all over him and his guitar but he never missed a note. At the end of the song, Perry asked in a very feminine voice "How did you know we were thirsty?"
After that, they sang the much anticipated "Being Caught Stealin" (which seemed to be lacking in entertainment value) so we left immediately afterwords.

It was almost midnight, there was about 15 thousand other people who would be competing for the road and we were on the west side. IT was a great show and the perfect way to start the weekend. I know that the boys had a great time and we will all remember the performances for a long time to come. Colleen, I think you chose the wrong concert. I know you made the decision for your kids but having seen No Doubt open for U2 in 2001, NIN blew them away. Regardless, I am sure you will enjoy your show but you missed a really great one this time. Now the boys are asking to go to the Marilyn Manson/Slayer show in July... I can hardly wait!!!

As a follow-up, I just discovered that Nine Inch Nails is offering their full, new album (the Slip) as a free download on their website. Just go to nin.com and submit your email to receive the download link if you want to hear the latest from NIN.

SWEET ! Thanks for the heads up on the free music! MAN I am so jealous, if I was rich instead of so Awesome I could afford to go to all the concerts! My pal went too and she was raving about Janes, I am bummed that I missed it but my girls would have been less than pleased,so No Doubt it is.I will have to do NIN next time by myself! Sounds like I missed a great show though :(

Colleen, it was a great show but one thing that made it great is that I was able to go with my sons. Who knows if you had gone with your daughters and they didn't like it, your experience could have been diminished.

No Doubt is a cool band too and I'm sure you guys will have a great time at the show! Oh, heads up... the drummer likes to get naked (or close to it) so some parts might not be kid appropriate.

I know how you feel about missed opportunities because I'm not rich either. In fact I probably should have saved the money since my wife works for Kyrene and doesn't get paid during the summer months. Oh well, you only live once. ;-)

Wow sounds like a great concert! I can't believe someone would actually throw beer on/at Dave Navarro. Why? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I think I am siding on bad... Sorry to influence you on the music downloading haha. But this makes a great point if the music is seriously worth it then it will be worth purchasing. Another think I recognize most of the names you mentioned and didn't know they were associated with these bands. Too bad I don't really have a liking for their music. Now if they put it on Guitar Hero then maybe I will end up liking it LOL! hahaha I know that gets peoples' goat!!

I would assume that having beer thrown at one's naked chest would not be pleasant (especially considering that you are holding an electric guitar) but it actually did look really cool on the big screen. At first, I thought that it was scripted (like something out of a music video). Don't sweat the bit torrent thing... I'm the one who made the decision to use it (partially due to the "assholeness" of Apple iTunes). I was all ready to chastise you for the Guitar Hero reference and then I saw you flipped it in a joking way. Even if you are not so keen on the music, I think you would have enjoyed the show and maybe you would have gained an appreciation for the bands. At any rate, I am looking forward to reading Colleen's blog about the No Doubt concert.
